The Righteous Quest
Righteous Quester. Take your place at the table of Personal Glory!
Every noble knight needs a Merlin. And it just so happens that I’ve been here waiting for you in this sick cave that we’re both now imagining.
NO BUT FOR REAL …
My hope for Psych Naw is to slowly build an accessible modality of therapy that actually works. Simple. There’s nothing to sell. No money to be exchanged. Just a person-to-person network that runs on goodwill, learning, and a shared desire for personal growth.
So far, Psych Naw has consisted of a ton of useful tools for people to watch, read, and learn from and the Psych Naw Discord. Today we add The Righteous Quest.
Know that this is NOT some kind of silver bullet and that participation isn’t going to fix everything overnight. Real personal growth takes a long time. And the path of righteousness takes us right to the center of all our most painful and difficult personal stuff. Stuff we’d prefer to not remember, think about, or acknowledge. So, just know that this may get gnarly, but also know that if it is getting gnarly, it’s probably working.
This is why I’ll only work with those who’ve completed ALL of the Psych Naw leaning content and joined the fellowship that is the Psych Naw Discord. Creating a Psych Naw account to track progress and doing the work required on your end is a necessity to show you’re serious about your path to personal growth. And if you don’t understand the content, then just jot down some notes. That way if we connect, we can get right into specifics.
Oh, you should know that I haven’t figured this program out all the way just yet. This is an experimental, work-in-progress kind of thing. But I’m opening myself up to working with a few individuals at a time. The only thing I ask in return is that you give 100% participation. If I get a sense that you are just going through the motions or using this as a sort of casual hang, I’ll bring this to your attention and possibly stop working with you. This may seem harsh, but I really don’t have time to mess around and bullshit. And honestly that’s not to say we couldn’t work together at a later date, but know that I’ll be very strict about what I expect since my time is limited due to the harsh demands of comedy podcasting and fatherhood.
If I detect that your personal mental health situation requires someone with more experience than myself then I will let you know that upfront and try to figure out how to connect you with a professional.
With that out of the way, allow me to introduce you to my program. It’s, like I said, a work-in-progess that will most likely change as time goes on.
The Program
While there are different phases of this program, there’s no official start or stop to it. It’s more of an evolving cycle of never-ending growth and improvement that can be repeated as many times as necessary.
The content, information, and exercises of these phases borrow heavily from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy which itself borrows heavily from a whole bunch of other stuff that would sound very learned and fancy to list … but who cares. The only thing that matters to me is that the things I’m using for this program have worked wonders for me personally and I’d like to share them.
Here’s the program in a very summarized nutshell … know that there’s a lot more that goes into it, but this should serve as a decent taste of what one would be in store for.
Phase 1 – Self-inquiry
This is where we start to do the work of figuring out what’s bothering us in life. Anger, Anxiety, Depression, Alienation, ect. We want to get a handle on the stuff that’s veering us off course from where we want to be in life. This involves a fair amount of self-monitoring and note taking throughout the day, but can definitely illuminate some of the root causes of our most pressing and annoying personal issues.
Phase 2 – What exactly do we want in life?
Once we’ve nailed down the stuff coming up inside of ourselves that messes us up and makes us do stuff we regret, the next step is figuring out what to do with ourselves if we’re not going to be spending all of our time spazzing out and fucking our lives up. This is the section where we concoct a practical vision for a better life.
Phase 3 – Learning to be present and balanced
So, once we figure out what we want in life and get a handle on the things that are preventing us from realizing our dreams, usually there’s a sense of calm and energized optimism that is slowly eroded by the day-to-day struggle of changing our actual lives for the better. Something unexpected happens. We get scared. We get negative. We start to tell ourselves that this is all a bunch of hopeless bullshit and we’re doomed, a fool to believe that we could ever change course toward something better, blah blah blah.
In order to combat this inevitable lull in growth, we’re going to have to learn (and practice) some pretty serious mindfulness/meditation type of stuff. Basically, learning how to flow with the good and bad in life so that we don’t get bucked off of our righteous steed of personal transformation and land back on our couch to resume getting drunk and bothering people on the internet. This is probably the most information-intensive part of the whole thing.
Phase 4 – Bringing things into existence
This is the part where you take all of the things you learned and actually DO stuff in real life. Basically, stepping into your version of Mom’s Spaghetti, whatever that may be.
